This was the Second General Meeting of the year! We had a guest speaker from the ICC. She talked to us about the upcoming career fair and the Do’s and Don’ts. It was interesting to hear about the etiquettes that must be followed in the career fair to ensure that you get noticed by representatives. She gave out good advice on how to make a great impression on those who are offering internships and full-time jobs. More information is available on the ICC website!! Matthew or Matt, the president of AIChE, concluded the meeting with a summary of the past events and a preview of all future events. If you missed it, don’t worry, your class representatives should keep you inform of all the upcoming activities.

This was the moment all the mentors and mentees where waiting for…. the chance to finally meet each other. During this dinner at the Hoa Viet, the mentors and mentees where finally able to meet and talk to each other. The food was really great, although the service was iffy… I know that a lot of people complained about the food taking too long, but it must be known that there was only ONE “old” chef serving the main restaurant AND 50+ extra people. (This is what the waitress said) It was then understandable why there was such a wait to get the food. I personally liked the food served and the opportunity to talk to others around me.

The Mentorship panel was set up by Kat. She asked four students to share their experiences in the mentorship program. This, for those of you who don’t know, is a program where Seniors and Juniors are paired up with Sophomores and Freshman. It’s a great opportunity for underclassmen to get together with upperclassmen and ask for advice. I think that it is really helpful that you can have someone to talk to who has been in your shoes. This panel gave a great introduction to the whole mentorship program with encounters and descriptions of past participants.

Remember when you where a senior in high school? I know for some of you it was about a year ago, for me it was three. I remember that I had no clue what to do in college. I had no one there to show me and explain to me the different engineering majors available. Preview day however, allowed seniors, parents, and other family members learn about engineers. It was a great informative event that allowed prospective students understand the different options available within the engineering world. From all the engineering tables however, ours was the absolute best. We had liquid nitrogen sorbet, which was a HUGE hit. (I mean, really? Who can resist free sorbet) Almost all who passed through the engineering tables stopped by…. Even those from other majors and tables… I found that the most entertaining! You could tell that all the other engineers where envious 

AIChE officially began with this first general meeting. It was one of the most interesting and fascinating meetings ever. General Mills had three representatives give a speech about the different generations that are currently in the work force. It was a great presentation that opened your mind and made you realize that once you get out there, in the work force, you will no longer be around exclusively people your age…. Think about it, when you start to work, you will need to work with and for people of all generations. And each generation is different because of all the events that affected their lifetimes, from wars to elections to politicians to YouTube…. This was definitely one of my favorite presentations ever made.

This was our first BBQ of the year! It was really good since they had burgers and hot dogs. (Like in most of the BBQ’s ) This BBQ was also a great networking opportunity since five Chevron representatives where present: Sean (yes, he was back!), Eli, Cynthia, and James Murphy. The whole BBQ was a casual and relaxing event in which the representatives answered all your questions. This was great because it allowed people to ask anything in a non-intimidating environment.

As the first event for AIChE this academic year, the Freshman Orientation proved to be a fun and successful event…. although the freshman turnout wasn’t that great (but really, who can blame them? I certainly was too shy and scared to do anything the first two weeks school). The actual event however, was a lot of fun. We had these “ice breakers” that involved everyone. The first was two lies and a truth and the second was a circle one. The second one was quite entertaining since it involved people running around after a certain fact applied to them specifically…. I must say it was really funny to see Brad running around with the rest of us. (Who wouldn’t?)

It was delicious! Congratulations team GentleChefs (a.k.a. Higgins team). They won over the judges with their fancy eggplant Cannelloni. Some of the other competing professors included Faller, Kuhl, “Stroeve,” “Risbud,” and everyone’s favorite advisor Brad. We also had some great judges, Sean Beecroft, Professor Ristenpart, and Industry rep. Muzhda Ferouz. Thanks to all of you who participated in the event, we will most likely be doing it again next year so stay tuned!

The conference started out with a bang! Friday night there was an awesome social that started at the colleges, where we had the most Guad’s burritos I have ever seen and then we headed to the Grad for a little bit of country dancing and Karaoke! Saturday’s conference went smoothly thanks to everyone who helped. The Chem Car ran!!!! Then kept running and running…but it’s ok, our team will work it out for next year and dominate the 2010 conference! Overall great job guys I hope you all had a blast!
